Vanishing New York

Gentrification is a big topic in NYC. The city has little sentimentality for the old days; incredible demand and limited space force developers to raze buildings before they can raise a new one in its place. As new offices and luxury apartments move in, some truly amazing spaces that have fallen into disuse must be knocked down and carted away.

Our friends at 12 Oz. Prophet have recently posted a lengthy interview with Nathan Kensinger, a filmmaker and photographer who has spent much of the last decade exploring these old, disused structures, capturing the quiet beauty of their neglect and decay before the bulldozers arrive to wipe them off the map.

The pace of change in New York is so rapid, that Kensinger has only captured a fraction of the buildings that have been demolished. As he notes,"if you blink, you will always miss something."
